

Mel Rust Thurman entered into glory on October 16, 2015. He was born to Melvin and Bessie Lousie Thurman on September 30, 1926 in Plainview, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean Thurman, and sons, John Timothy Thurman and William Thomas Thurman. He is survived by his son, James Theodore Thurman (Ted) and wife, Ann, son, Matthew Terrance Thurman (Terry), grandchildren; Libby, Toby, Rusty, Alisa, Todd, Tucker, great-grandchildren; Jessica, Colby, Presley, Grayson, and Haddie.
Mel graduated from Abilene High School in 1945, and attended Harden Simmons University. Mel and Jean were childhood sweethearts and knew each other for over 70 years. Mel served in the Navy, worked with his father in the photography studio, worked for the government, and for different funeral homes. Mel had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. Mel attended Castle Hills First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, sang with the choir, taught Sunday School, and served with the Jail Ministries. Mel loved the Lord Jesus Christ his Savior.
Visitation will be held on Monday October 26 at 11:00 am, services to follow at noon at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
