Melvin Paul Logan, devoted husband and father, was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1939, to Benjamin Logan and Henrietta Kupperblatt, and died on May 31, 2026, at the age of 87. He moved to Maryland to further his culinary career. A strong believer in community service, he became a Cub Scout leader and started the first Boy Scout troop for dyslexic boys in Maryland. At that time very little was known about dyslexia, and it was assumed that dyslexic children were intellectually lacking.
He also became a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, because there was no paid fire house in our town.
Proud of his Judaic heritage, he taught Sunday School with an emphasis on fostering understanding between Christians and Jews. He served as PTA President of the Rolling Road School for the Disabled and was a Career Day presenter at Franklin Middle School, where he demonstrated his culinary skills.
He later moved to San Antonio to help care for his aging mother-in-law. The Forum at Lincoln Heights Senior Community hired him for his culinary and management skills, and he conducted a Passover Seder there for the residents. Several times a month, he also volunteered to prepare meals for patients and their families at the Renaissance House.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Anthony de Padua Church, where he served as a volunteer cook and Assistant Food Distribution Program Coordinator. He volunteered to conduct cooking classes for the University of the Incarnate Word's program for diabetics. To promote Judeo-Christian dialogue, he also conducted and cooked the first Passover Seder at San Fernando Cathedral.
After retiring, he relished being a tutor and mentor for seven years at Regency Elementary School. He also volunteered to teach math and chess to two non-English-speaking students from Garner Middle School and MacArthur High School, during and after COVID, when confusion reigned.
Mel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia; his sons, William and Jared Logan; and his granddaughter, Priscilla Logan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Logan and Henrietta Kupperblatt.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony de Padua Church, 102 Lorenz Rd., San Antonio, TX 78209, followed by a graveside service at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Hwy., San Antonio, TX 78218.
The family asks that anyone wishing to make a memorial donation contact the family directly.
