After losing both parents, Merle immigrated to the U.S. in 1947 to live with her Aunt Hilda in San Antonio, attending Alamo Heights for her last year of high school. Upon graduation, she channeled her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit into a successful career as a beautician, soon purchasing the beauty shop where she worked. After marrying Ned, she became a stay-at-home mom to their three children. They moved around a lot in the early days: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, South Carolina, before ending up back in San Antonio. Both she and Ned got their real estate licenses and opened their own firm. A testament to her versatility and adaptability, at a time when she should have been looking forward to retirement and finances were tight, she worked as a florist and successfully managed the family’s finances to avoid selling the family ranch.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Merle was a woman of diverse interests. She enjoyed reading books about strong women and started her day reading the newspaper, keeping abreast of current events and checking on her stocks. Her keen interest in the stock market was not just a pastime but a reflection of her intelligent and analytical mind. She was an animal lover from a young age and always had a pet dog. Late in life, she became a fan of basketball and loved to watch the Spurs play.
Those who knew Merle will remember her for the love she so generously gave and the kind-hearted spirit that defined her. Whether through her gentle words, her thoughtful actions, or the simple warmth of her presence, she made a lasting impact on those around her. Her intelligence was evident not only in her business acumen but also in the wise counsel and guidance she provided to family and friends.
Merle's family was the cornerstone of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Neddie, and her treasured daughter, Mary Lou. She is survived by her devoted children, Alice and John, who will carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Her granddaughter, Bridget, will forever cherish memories of her grandmother's unwavering support and guidance. Merle's sister, Eunice, along with numerous family members and friends, will miss her deeply.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we take solace in the rich tapestry of memories she has left behind. Her spirit, characterized by love, kindness, and intelligence, will continue to inspire and guide us. Merle Gilbert's story is one of a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure in the hearts of those she loved.
