Mickie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Rudy; her parents, Manuel and Juanita; and her siblings Pauline, Rosa, Yolanda, Danny, and Raul.
She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and family. She is survived by her daughter, Roxanne DeHoyos (Mike); her son, Rudy III (Linda); her siblings Delia, Gilbert, Manuel, and Arthur; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, which include her cherished bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she lovingly embraced as her own, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Throughout her life, Mickie was affectionately known to many as “Mom,” “Gramma,” and “Tía.” These were more than just names; they were a reflection of the love, kindness, and generosity she shared, along with the sense of belonging she extended to everyone around her. Family meant everything to Mickie. She made it a priority to stay connected with her siblings, nieces, and nephews, nurturing those special relationships throughout her life. Whether through a phone call, a visit, or simply keeping in touch, she made sure those she loved knew they were never forgotten. To Mickie, family was not defined solely by blood, but by the love and relationships built along the way. Her heart always had room for one more, and she leaves behind a large and loving family whose lives are forever enriched by having known her.
A proud graduate of Edgewood High School, Class of 1956, Mickie was an enthusiastic member of the Red Raiders pep squad. Her school spirit never faded with time. Even many years after graduation, she would occasionally break into one of her beloved Red Raiders fight cheers while watching football games. In fact, among her treasured belongings, her family discovered copies of those very cheers she had kept all these years—a sweet reminder of the youthful spirit and cherished memories she carried throughout her life. She began her working career at El Capitan Drive-In and later worked at Neisner’s, Joske’s, and Dillard’s department store at North Star Mall. Through the years, she built lasting friendships and touched the lives of many people she encountered.
Mickie was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan who loved watching football and cheering on her favorite team. But as much as she loved her Cowboys, one of her greatest pleasures was visiting the casinos! Unlike football season, a trip to the casino could be enjoyed year-round, especially when she could convince her daughter or son to take her. She loved the excitement of gambling, the anticipation of a lucky win, and simply being there. Whenever she returned home and someone asked, “How did you do?” her answer was almost always the same: “I did very good!” Of course, the family never quite knew what that meant! Although she certainly had her share of lucky wins, no one ever really knew whether she came home ahead or had spent a little more than she won. But to Mickie, that hardly seemed to matter. Win or lose, she thoroughly enjoyed every trip, always returning with a positive attitude, a smile, and never a complaint. For her, the real joy was in the experience, and those casino adventures became some of her happiest and most memorable times.
Her commitment to fellowship and service was also reflected in her longtime involvement with the Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary, Post 1907. Mickie remained actively involved throughout her life, cherishing the friendships, camaraderie, and opportunities to serve others that came with being part of this special organization. Above all, Mickie will be remembered for her generous heart, welcoming spirit, and the unconditional love she shared so freely. She had a special way of making people feel like family, whether they had known her for a lifetime or had only recently entered her life.
Her greatest legacy is not measured by the years she lived, but by the countless lives she touched, the memories she created, and the love she leaves behind. Although she has left this earthly life, the love she gave so generously will continue to live on through the many generations of family and friends who were blessed to call her Mom, Gramma, Sister, Tía, and, to many friends, Mickie.
She will be deeply loved, forever remembered, and dearly missed.
