Michael Edward Dau, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, at the age of 72 in San Antonio, Texas. Born on November 17, 1952, in Davenport, Iowa, to Charles Edward Dau and Margaret Jean Dau, Michael's life was a testament to the values of love, passion, and spirited dedication to family and country.
Michael's early years in Davenport were marked by his excellence on the baseball field. As a skilled pitcher, he played varsity baseball all three years in high school and they won state his senior year, leaving behind a legacy of athletic prowess. This love for sports was a theme throughout his life, and he took great joy in coaching his daughter Caitlin's softball teams. Caitlin inherited her father's athletic talents, achieving many accolades in sports and earning her master’s degree in ESL, much to Michael's pride and delight.
After high school, Michael answered the call of duty and proudly served in the U.S. Army. His service to his country was a source of immense pride for him and his family, and it was a period of his life that shaped the unwavering patriotism he carried with him always. After his military service, he worked 30 years for Modern Woodman of America, moving up the ranks and never bragging about his accomplishments. It was a true testament to his steadfast and loyal nature.
Michael's commitment to family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a loving husband to his wife, Pamela Jane Dau, and a guiding light to his children, Andrew Edward Dau, Benjamin Michael Dau, and daughter-in-law Dani, and Caitlin Margaret King, along with her husband Benjamin. His role as 'Grandpa' to Emory Favor Dau, Malachi Toviah Dau, Theodore Edward King, and Callum Elliot King was one of his most treasured titles. Each grandchild will carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.
He was a brother to Steven C. Dau and his wife Sandra, Thomas L. Dau and his wife Diane, Debra L. Hart and her husband Brett, and Brad A. Dau and his wife Janice. Michael's siblings, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends, were a source of happiness and companionship throughout his life.
Michael was proud of all his children's accomplishments, including his son Andy's pursuit of the culinary arts and his son Ben and daughter-in-law Dani's devoted service as pastors at Vineyard Church. His unwavering support for his family's endeavors was a hallmark of his loving nature.
Known for his spirited personality, Michael was passionate about life and the people in it. He was the kind of person who brought energy and enthusiasm to every room he entered, and his presence was a comfort and joy to those who knew him.
Michael also had a deep sense of adventure which took him to Korea with the military, and later those adventures continued with his family and his wife. They took long trips to far-flung places including Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Hawaii and all around the U.S., the Panama Canal, Europe and the Caribbean.
Michael's life was not just about his achievements but also about the love he shared and the lives he touched. He was a man who made a lasting impact through simple acts of kindness, a supportive word, and his unwavering integrity. Michael will be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, with a passion that was contagious and a love that was all-encompassing.
As we bid farewell to Michael Edward Dau, we celebrate the life of a man who was the embodiment of living with a loving and passionate spirit.
