With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved Michael Garcia, 69, who peacefully departed from this life on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in the comfort of his home. He was born into this world on February 28, 1955, blessed by his parents Eliseo and Angelina Rosas Garcia in San Antonio, Texas. Michael was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of ’73, and attended San Antonio College and St. Mary’s University.
Mike was diagnosed with Advance Stage Prostate cancer in 2009. Over the next 15 years, he saw all 3 of his children married and was able to meet 10 of his 11 grandchildren, with the11th due August 2024.
In December 2022, Mike was at the point in his cancer journey where he was prepared to talk to the Oncologist about stopping all treatment and entering hospice. Right before Christmas 2022, he was accepted to receive a new drug to treat his cancer. They said it was not a cure, but would extend life, usually 17-18 months. Mike received the full course of the drug. That was his miracle drug! Mike regained his health and spent the rest of 2023 traveling again to see the Grandkids, attending First Communions and Confirmations, and Ballet Dance Presentations! But his PSA slowly started climbing again and the Oncologist said it was time to shift from treating the cancer to maximizing the time he had left. In mid-May, he entered hospice and spent his last days surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Michael leaves behind a legacy cherished by his spouse of almost 47 years, Thelma Garcia, his three children and their spouses, Christopher (Stephanie) of Dallas, Texas, Matthew (Jean) of Maryville, Illinois, and Megan (Leif) Gagliardi of White Plains, New York, and 11 grandchildren, all of whom were profoundly touched by his presence. He is also survived by his two sisters, Angelina Wittich, and Gloria (Jim) Pichler. He is now reunited with his mother and father, and granddaughter, Mary Josephine Garcia, awaiting the joyful reunion promised by our faith.
A devout member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Michael found solace in his unwavering faith and friendships developed in the Church, hosting an annual blood drive as part of his Knights of Columbus membership, and serving as a weekly Greeter at the 9:30 Sunday Mass. He exemplified Christian virtues such as love, compassion, and forgiveness, extending his kindness to all he encountered.
Michael's life was centered around his commitment to family, community, and God. He found joy in fishing, golf and skiing, offering his talents in architectural design, completing two home builds, and custom landscaping. Most of all, he loved traveling to see his family, especially if it involved a beach vacation, where the sound of the surf gave him so much peace and happiness. He will be remembered by many as an honest car salesman, as he worked for Cadillac as a Sales Manager for 30 years.
In remembrance of Michael, contributions may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (DoGood.t2t.org); this organization honors the legacy of fallen first responders and veterans.
The Family will receive guests for a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6:00pm Monday, July 22, at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 N Loop 1604 E, San Antonio, Texas, 78232. A solemn Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at 10:00am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 20523 Huebner Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78258, where we will gather to celebrate Michael's life and offer prayers for his eternal rest. Interment will be Thursday, July 25, at 10:00am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 5100 W Plano Pkwy, Plano, Texas 75093.
The Family wishes to thank the Staff at Guiding Light Hospice, as well as multiple family and friends for all the loving care we have experienced during this journey. Michael has left an indelible mark on our hearts and souls. May he find peace in the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
