He was born in 1959 in Chicago, Illinois, to Jose Saenz Medina and Juanita Alvarez Medina. From an early age, Michael learned the values of family and perseverance that would shape the devoted husband, father, and grandfather he became. Hard work was woven into his childhood—he earned his first job at just seven years old, and by eleven had joined his first music group, using his talents to help pay for private school. Yet even with ambition and responsibility placed upon him so young, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Michael always answered simply: a father.
Michael joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1976, a decision that guided his faith and anchored his life. This sacred path led him to serve a two-year mission in the Boston Massachusetts Mission and ultimately to be sealed to the love of his life Elizabeth in the Washington, D.C. Temple in 1981. Within six years of their marriage, he joyfully welcomed three sons, fulfilling the dream he had carried since childhood.
In 1988, Michael and family moved to San Antonio, drawn by both opportunity and family. There, he and his brother Jose formed Tejano band, Estrella Del Norte, a venture that would later lead to a recording contract with Capitol Records and a nomination for Best Conjunto for the Tejano Pura Vida Awards. Though music remained a lifelong passion, Michael chose to center his life on his family, faithfully serving in his church, and building a career at Christus Health, where he dedicated 29 years of service.
Through every season of his life—music, faith, work, and family—Michael lived with purpose and steady devotion. Those who knew him remember not only what he accomplished, but how he loved: fully and faithfully. His legacy is written in the lives he touched, the values he passed on, and the enduring example he leaves behind.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Jose Saenz Medina; his mother, Juanita Alvarez Medina; and his brother, Jose Alvarez.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Medina, and their three beloved sons: Michael Anthony and his wife Amanda; Jacob Andrew and his wife Ashleigh; and Steven Mathew. He is also survived by his sister Rosa; his brother Jose and his wife Anna; and his sister Janet and her husband Alan. Most treasured were his nine grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and affection and lovingly called him “Papi”: Diego, Camila, Noah, Ezra, Mathew, Santiago, Aiden, Nathan, and Harper.
