Michael was, at his core, a gentle and patient man. He had a deep sense of empathy and an instinctive way of taking care of others, often quietly, always selflessly. He had a great sense of humor and a calm steadiness that made people feel safe and understood. Nothing brought him more pride or joy than his children and grandchildren, and he never missed an opportunity to let them know how proud he was of them.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Mullen, his partner in life and love. He was a devoted father to Marissa (Wiley) Norden and Matthew (Tavia) Mullen, and a proud grandfather to Elijah Norden, Ari Norden, Mika Mullen, and Camp Mullen, each of whom held a very special place in his heart. He is also survived by his brothers, Harold “Butch” (Yong) Mullen and Bob (Pat) Mullen, along with many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur “Art” and Madeline “Madge” Mullen, his sister Peg Reynolds, and his brother Richard “Dick” Mullen.
Raised in Plainfield, Wisconsin, Michael carried his Midwestern roots with him throughout his life. He proudly served his country as a Vietnam War veteran. He spent many years working in the movie theater industry as a manager and film buyer, before taking a leap of faith and opening the first Play It Again Sports store in Texas.
Michael’s love of Wisconsin sports was legendary. A lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Milwaukee Brewers, he brought his family together around games, traditions, and trips planned around cheering on his teams. Those moments became some of the most cherished family memories. He also loved oldies music, a good glass of red wine, and the simple joy of being surrounded by the people he loved.
Burial will take place in Gloversville, New York. A memorial service to celebrate Michael’s life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, at Temple Beth-El.
Michael will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, his devotion to family, and the quiet way he showed love every single day. His legacy lives on in the family he so deeply cherished. Go Pack Go!
Memorial donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox foundation (michaeljfox.org), Disabled American Veterans (help.dav.org or Temple Beth-El (beth-elsa.org).
