A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, Nov 18th at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 N. Loop 1604 E. in San Antonio.
Mike was born on January 31, 1946 in Dallas to Finis (Bill) and Maxine Willshire. He graduated from North Texas State University in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. He served in the Air Force from 1968 to 1972 as a Communications Specialist and was part of the communications support team for NASA’s Apollo 11 Mission—the first manned mission to the moon. He enjoyed getting to witness the historic launch up close. He then spent 18 months in the Philippines and returned to the US to work at NORAD in Colorado Springs. After Mr. Willshire’s time in the USAF, he began a 30+ year career in Insurance with GAB, St. Paul Insurance Co., and USAA.
He was a dedicated family man, who was very active in the lives of his five children. His love of sports carried over to the kids, and he attended every Little League and soccer game he could, with lots of help practicing in between. It was hard to miss his trademark St. Louis Cardinals or Dallas Cowboys hats and shirts.
Mike was also a military history buff, whose model airplanes filled the ceilings of his sons’ bedrooms.
He is survived by his five children; Chris (spouse Monique), Katie Jenkins (spouse Stewart), Kent (spouse Brandy), Kyle, and Kevin (spouse Meghan), and seven grandchildren; Sarah, Abby, Claire, & Luke Jenkins; Emma Willshire, Tessa Willshire, and Matthew Willshire.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
