Mildred Annette Green King, Bunny to her husband, Mama to her daughter Momo to her grandchildren and Mil to her friends passed peacefully from this life to eternal life on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the age of 96. She was surrounded by her family.
Mildred was born in Waelder, Texas to Fletcher Green and Beauty Lamkin on July 4, 1920. She was baptized at a young age and attended St. Paul Baptist Church in Waelder. She was reared by her grandparents, Professor William Lamkin and Maggie Cunningham Lamkin, in a strict Christian environment. She attended school in her early years in Waelder and later Phillis Wheatley High School in San Antonio.
As a teenager she worked for Mr. Sam Kelley in his grocery store and in later years she worked as the bookkeeper at Kelley Funeral Home. After relocating to San Antonio, Mildred worked at Kelly Field during World War II. In later years, she became employed by the Miller and Haas family (over 50 years) and the Merrill family. Her relationship with these families was more than an employer-employee relationship and they remained friends until her death.
Upon relocating to San Antonio, Mildred united with the West End Baptist Church and later with Friendship Baptist Church where she remained a member for over 60 years. She was active in her church and participated with the Sunday School, Mission, Women's Day Chorus, Church Mortgage Committee and Trustee.
In 1990, Mildred became Momo, so named by her first grandchild. Momo would go to work and come home and take care of both of her grandchildren. Many times she would stand in at functions for her grandchildren or she would take care of them while their parents were at work.
Momo retired in 2000 at the age of 80, to care for her husband, who was felled by a stroke. She remained his primary caregiver until his death in 2008. After her husband's death, she travelled with her family.
In 2013, Momo suffered a fire in her home and was injured. After 2.5 months on the burn unit at SAMMC, she was released and made a complete recovery. Later in 2013, other health issues surfaced. The last four years of Momo's life were filled with many challenges for her, but she remained strong in her faith and character. Because of her strength and faith she cared for many of her family members in their declining years and she outlived her generation of family members.
Her earthly journey has come to a peaceful end and she is enjoying a new beginning with her Lord and her family. Momo will always be in our hearts and minds.
Momo is survived by her daughter, Vickie and her husband, Joseph R.; 2 grandchildren, Joseph E. (Jazmyne, her children Sema'j and Serenity), Stephanie; great-grand-dog, Nola Mae; god sister, Shirley M. Brooks; god niece, Debra Brooks Ensley; a niece, nephews and lifelong friend, Grace E. Ferguson.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Porter Loring on McCullough from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Followed by Visitation at St. Stephen Baptist Church, 2011 E. Carson Street, San Antonio, Texas from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
