

Milo was born on February 10, 1936 to parents, John and Mabel Hoenscheid prematurely in Salem, SD at the home of his grandmother, Maude Mae Perin Schmitt. A winter storm prevented the doctor from being present when the 2 pound Milo was born. In 1954 Milo graduated from St. Mary's Catholic high school in Salem. Milo graduated from Northern State Teachers College (NSTC) in Aberdeen SD where he received a Bachelor's degree in Education. While at NSTC Milo met and married Petronilla (Pat) Selzler on November 28, 1957. In 1954 Milo joined the SD National Guard. In 1958 Milo was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from the first Officer Candidate Class conducted by the SD National Guard. Milo was seriously injured in an automobile accident in 1960 while at National Guard Active Duty Training at Camp Guernsey, WY. Milo was medically retired from the active roles of the National Guard in 1962. In 1961 Milo moved with his family from Aberdeen to Irene SD where he taught high school during the school year of 1961-62. In June of 1962 Milo moved with his family to Rapid City SD where he was employed by the State Dept. of Military Affairs in the Div. of Civil Defense. In 1968 Milo's job required a move to Pierre SD. In 1978 Milo and family moved to Redmond WA where he was employed with a planning consulting firm. In 1984 Milo and family moved to Waipahu HI where he was employed by the Dept. of Navy at the Pearl Harbor Naval Complex as a Navy Hawaii Region Emergency Management Program Planner/Coordinator. Milo retired from the federal government in 1998. In June 1998 Milo moved to San Antonio, TX with wife Pat. Milo was a member of NARFE and TRIAD/SALT as a representative for NARFE. He was also active with AACOG BSAC. Milo and his wife Pat were volunteers at the Institute of Texan Culture. Milo volunteered at Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital and gave a lot of sage advice. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat; daughter, Kristi; and great-grandson Wyatt. Milo is survived by his daughters, CSM Cheryl Mathis (Ret.), Kara Hughes and husband, Todd; son-in-law, Fred Magee, Jr.; grandchildren, Amanda Buck and husband, Alvah, Bryce Magee and wife, Kayla, Karisa Magee, Jessica Loe and husband, Jason; Benjamin Hughes, Emily Hughes; and 5 great-grandchildren; sisters, Karen Rayman, Gay Lee Nagy, Geralyn Fabich. There will be no local service. Services will take place at a later date in Ft. Pierre, SD. Memorial gifts may be made to any veterans' organization.
