

He died peacefully surrounded by family including his wife of over 55 years, Mary Louise Stokes.
Born in Rector Arkansas, Mr. Stokes graduated from Poplar Bluff High School and later served in the US Navy on the USS Custer in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University in 1949. Later, he earned his law degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
He began his legal career at the law firm of Moser-Marsalek. Later he worked at Laclede Gas Company, serving as Associate General Counsel. With others, including his brother, Dr. James Stokes, he helped form Momedico, and insurance company serving health professionals. Later with Kevin O'Malley, he formed the law firm of Stokes and O'Malley of Clayton, MO.
Among the survivors are his wife, Mary Louise Stokes of San Antonio, Texas; his brother, Dr. James Stokes of St. Louis; four sons, John Stokes of San Antonio, Texas, Lynn Stokes of Boerne, Texas, Mitchell Stokes of Los Angeles, California and Neil Stokes of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Claire Stokes-O'Brien of Houston, Texas and eleven grandchildren.
