Nancy Gael Torries

Nancy Gael Gafford Torries, 80 years old, passed away on June 7, 2016 in San Antonio, TX. She was born in Madison WI. On February 27, 1936 to Waldo and Lucille Gafford Sr. the family moved to San Antonio where she attended school and graduated from Incarnate Word High School.

In 1954 she married Robert Slattery and from this 22 year union produced five wonderful and loving children. They remained very close friends for the remainder of their lives. Nancy worked for several Oil & Gas companies retiring from Tesoro Petroleum Corporation where she met Dr. Thomas Torries. They married in 1979 and moved to Morgantown, WV in 1983 when he became a member of the faculty at West Virginia University. She returned to Texas in 2011 to spend the remainder of her life near family. She enjoyed traveling and fishing with Tom, reading, shopping and was an avid bowler for 50+ years in San Antonio and Morgantown.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Donna Gael Slattery Hewlett, brother Wally and sister in law Vicki Gafford. She is survived by her children Timothy Slattery (Barbara) of Lucas TX, Karen Slattery Gray (Michael) of Cross Plains, TX, Michael Slattery (Diane) of Canyon Lake, TX, and James Slattery (Suzanne) of El Campo, TX, step-children Michael Torries (Susan) of Morgantown, WV, Lynda Torries of Mobile, AL, Daniel Torries of Panama City, Panama, and niece Jennifer Gafford Flowers of San Antonio, TX, plus 14 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, also numerous friends in TX and WV.

A memorial service will be held June 16, 2016, 1:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Park - Mausoleum Chapel #2, 1701 Austin Highway, in San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any animal organization or a charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of Sunset Funeral Home, San Antonio, TX.
