

Colonel Neal G. Grimland, U.S. Army (Ret.), LM, BSM, PH, MSM, died on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at his home in San Antonio, TX at the age of 95. He was born in Clifton, TX on December 28, 1917, graduating from Waco High School and Clifton College.
After two years with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, he volunteered for the Army in 1942, fighting in the 25th Inf. Div. during the Asian-Pacific Campaign. He was awarded a Battlefield Commission on Luzon, P. I. in 1945.
He later served with distinction in Korea and Vietnam, and was stationed in Turkey, Japan, Kansas and NC. He completed his Masters at George Washington University, Army Command and Staff College and Air War College.
His last appointments were CO of 1st Brigade, 3rd Inf. Div., and at HQ 7th Corps, both in W. Germany.
After retirement, he lived in San Antonio where he was an active member of Shepherd King Lutheran Church. He spent several years in education at Central Texas College. He belonged to the National Order of Battlefield Commissions, was commander of the local chapter and was elected National Commander in 1998. He played golf well into his 90's.
Col. Grimland was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and two sisters.
He is survived by, his daughter, Gay Grimland Close, son-in-law, Christopher Close; two grandsons, Christian and Cameron, four nieces and four nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring North.
