Nelson A. Ortiz

Nelson Antonio Ortiz, age 80, passed away on December 6, 2023, in Puerto Rico. Nelson was born November 8, 1943, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to parents, Gertrudis and Geronimo Ortiz. He graduated from Colegio de Agricultura & Artes Mecanicas de Mayaguez in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also graduated from The University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in 1976. He served in the Army Reserves and later joined the U.S. Air Force having attained and retired at the rank of Captain. He had a distinguished career of over 30 years in the U.S. Department of Defense in the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Agency.

Nelson is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Rosalia Ortiz; daughter, Dr. Waleska Ortiz Garza (Dr. Gabriel Garza), and their grandson, Liam Garza. He is also survived by his sisters, Elba Iris Ortiz de Sanchez (Engr. Andres Sanchez), Awilda Ortiz de Figueroa (Dr. Victor Luis Figueroa); nephews, Engr. Jose Andres Sanchez (Marisol), Engr. Victor Jorge Figueroa (Cindy), Victor Javier Figueroa (Luisa); and niece, Dr. Tonya Sanchez de Otero (Dr. Antonio Otero).

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

Deacon Frank Martinez will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow at 2:15 p.m. in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery under Shelter No. 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
