Nina Helen Engel Stewart was born in San Antonio, Texas to Alexander Adolph Engel and Anna Helen Habenicht Engel on January 27, 1927. She was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church by Pastor August I. Wolff, Ph.D. Nina was a lieutenant colonel in the Junior Women's Army Corps and graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1945. She attended Cottey College in Missouri, where her studies focused in accounting and business management. She married Sam Ewell Stewart, originally from Junction, Texas, on June 14, 1947 at St. John's and Pastor August I. Wolff, Ph.D. presided over the ceremony. Nina was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school there for over thirty years. She had a long and successful career as a substitute teacher in San Antonio.
Sam predeceased Nina on December 2, 1994. She leaves behind three children, Nina Elizabeth Stewart Campbell, John Mark Stewart, and Scott Engel Stewart; two grandchildren, William Thomas Weeks and Lori Beth Campbell; three great-grandchildren, Jack Thomas Weeks, Nicole Weeks, and Annabella Rose Weeks; and four step grandchildren, Clifton Weeks, Angel Weeks, Max Campbell, and Aaron Campbell.
Nina passed away in her sleep from natural causes on April 5, 2014 at the age of 87.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218. The service will start at 12:00 noon at Sunset Funeral Home and she will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Sunset Funeral Home Mausoleum.
