

After graduating from flight school in 1943 in Pampa, Texas, his career in the Air Force included piloting B-24's, K-C 97 refuelers, and C-130 transport vehicles from WW II through the Berlin airlift, the Cuban missile crisis, to the Vietnam era until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel at Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas.
A graduate of the University of Illinois with a BA and ME in education, he taught history at Abilene High School from 1967-1987. A committed volunteer from the beginning of the Abilene Medical Care Mission, he was an active member at First Central Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and long-standing Sunday School teacher. He was an ardent supporter of the Abilene Philharmonic and the president of the Abilene Founder Lions Club in 1991-92.
He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years Lillian in December of 2010.
He is survived by his daughters, Rev. Diane Hutchins and husband David of Burke, Virginia and Gail Olsen of San Antonio; his grandchildren, Julie Hutchins, Sara Holland, and Peter Hutchins; and great-granddaughters, Kathryn, Grace, Camille, and Lillian.
He and his wife Lillian will be inurned at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in the fall.
