

Norman served in three branches of the United States Military, the Coast Guard, the Army and the Air Force. His service in the Air Force was a turning point in his life. While attending basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio he met and married Edith Frazar, a beautiful native Texan. After serving at various Air Force bases in the United States and Canada, Norman received an honorable discharge and they returned to San Antonio to raise their family.
In San Antonio, Norman began a very successful insurance career first as an agent with Aetna and then with Mass Mutual. A Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), he received numerous awards and was consistently a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.
Norman loved spending time with his family from game nights and tennis weekends, to camping and skiing out west. He and Edith were always attending the many extra-curricular and sports activities that their three sons and daughter participated in. These family times continued with his extended family as each of his children married and had their own families.
An active member of Concordia Lutheran. Norman had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in the church choir. A popular soloist, many church services, weddings and funerals were blessed by his talent.
Norman was preceded in death by his wife Edith; parents George and Florence Thomas; brother Cornelius Thomas; brother-in-law John Frazar; and brother-in-law Robert Rapp.
He is survived by his children J. Norman Thomas, Corpus Christi, Texas; Edith Shelley (Denis), Daytona Beach, Florida; Sterling Thomas (Brenda), The Dalles, Oregon; and George Thomas (Terri), Boulder, Colorado; grandchildren Frazar Thomas, Sommer Zimmerman (Colin), Sterling DeRusso (John), Gus Thomas, Meredith Thomas and Amelia Thomas; great grandchildren Caleb, Kylie and Claire Zimmerman; beloved sister, Georgeanne Rapp; niece Becky Kautz (Chris); nephew Rob Rapp; sister-in-law Ceil Frazar; and great nieces and nephew.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM on Monday, December 28, 2020 at Porter Loring Mortuary North where a Service will be conducted at 11:30 AM. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
