Olga A. Gavia, age 100, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on February 4, 1926, she was the daughter of Martin T. Herrera, Jr., and Olga A. Garza Herrera. Olga lived in San Antonio throughout her life before moving to Flower Mound, Texas, to live with her son and daughter-in-law in late 2024.
Olga was married to her beloved husband, Nick Gavia, for 61 years. A devoted mother to her three sons who helped care for her later in life, she will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and love for family and friends.
Sociable and joyful, Olga was quick to laugh and always greeted others with a welcoming smile. She enjoyed gardening, playing Bunco with friends, and spending time with her grandchildren, friends and relatives. Later in life, she developed a passion for reading and became a voracious reader, enjoying more than 350 books.
Olga was preceded in death by her parents, Martin T. Herrera, Jr., and Olga A. Garza Herrera; her husband, Nick Gavia; and her sons, Lionel and Gerard Gavia.
She is survived by her son, David Gavia and his wife, Patricia; her daughter-in-law, Carmen Gavia; seven grandchildren— Denise Gavia, Keith Gavia, Sr., Melissa Gavia, Cheryl Gavia, Lisa Gavia, Jennifer Klekar, and Michael Gavia; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Carmen Gavia for the loving care and support provided to Olga and to Davis Family Elder Care and Three Oaks Hospice for the loving care and support they provided Olga during her final months.
A Rosary will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 350 Sutton Dr., San Antonio, Texas 78228, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. A reception will be held at the church before interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78209, at 1:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas.
