

Oscar Wurzbach Schuchart, retired, died March 16, 2013. He was born April 20, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas and was the only child of Lee and Hulda Wurzbach Schuchart. After graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1939, he entered the school of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M College, class of '43. In December 1942 he married Evelyn Haegelin from Hondo, Texas. In January 1943 he left for WWII service and was commissioned in the U.S. Cavalry. He returned to Texas A&M where he received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947. Oscar became a licensed Professional Engineer in Texas then opened his own consulting engineering company in 1951. He was president of Schuchart & Associates Professional Engineers, Inc. until his retirement in 1992. He was involved in the mechanical and electrical engineering design and construction of such major buildings as the Palacio Del Rio Hotel, Medical Sciences Library at Texas A&M, Main Library at Prairie View A&M, additions to the San Antonio Convention Center and the Arena, and many hospitals, schools and churches. Oscar was a president of the Kiwanis Club of San Antonio and of the Bexar Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers; a Fellow and a Life member in the ASHRAE; a Life Member of the Texas Professional Engineers; and an Endowed member of the Texas A&M Former Students and the 12th Man Foundation. He was a Charter Member of the Distinguished Graduates by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at A&M. He served on the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Advisory Council for more than 10 years. In 1999, he and his late wife Evelyn became Pillars of the Texas A&M Foundation. In 2001, the San Antonio A&M Club presented him with the Polly Krueger Award.
Oscar was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 63 years, Evelyn. He is survived by his son, Gary and wife Eileen; daughter Luanne Reinhardt and husband Lee; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A Service of Remembrance will be held Thursday, March 28 at 2:30PM at Independence Hill. For those unable to attend Thursday’s service, a second Service of Remembrance will be Saturday, March 30 at 2PM at Sunset North Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
In honor of Oscar and his deep A&M roots, be sure to wear maroon and/or white or your Aggie shirts to the service!
