Patricia Irene Myers, Ph.D, passed from us on Sunday, April 28th, 2007. She would have been 78 on May 15th. Patti, as she was known to her family and her many friends, was born in Goodland, Kansas, but grew up and lived most of her life in Texas. Patti received a BA in Education from Texas A&I in 1951, and a Ph.D in Education from the University of Texas in 1963, with a major in the field of special education. She was a leader in that area and had authored several textbooks, one of which was considered to be the standard for teaching in the classroom. Dr. Myers also was a Certified Psychologist and was a Member of the Texas State Board of Examiners during her career. Dr. Myers also was proficient in speech pathology and received many honors in that field. She belonged to a great many prestigious organizations reflecting both her abilities and achievements. She received many honors for her work and consultation. In 1936, Patti contracted polio which left her partially paralyzed for the remainder of her life. In spite of her handicap, she was an accomplished educator and was a Professor at Our Lady of the Lake College for many years. Patti also was instrumental in designing and implementing special education courses at all the military bases both in the U.S. and abroad. Patti Myers was a successful person, both professionally and personally. Her handicap never prevented her from achieving goals that a non-handicap person would envy. Patti never allowed her affliction to interfere with her intellectual and personal abilities. To those who knew her, she will be deeply missed. Her leave-taking leaves a void in their lives. She gave a great deal to the children who had special needs and left the world a much better place for them.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the March of Dimes, an organization that was instrumental in funding the successful effort to develop a polio vaccine.
