On December 9, 2023 the spirit of Patricia “Patti” Settles returned unto the Lord at the age of 70. Patti was born in San Antonio, Texas to Raymond Albert and Estelle Mae Hazel (nee Krobusek), the eldest of seven siblings. Her father was a career Air Force Sergeant and the family moved frequently. Patti graduated from Vanden High School in Fairfield, California in 1971. One of her proudest achievements was serving in the Civil Air Patrol. She relocated with her family when her father was transferred to Turkey. There she married and had her daughter Rachel before returning to the States, ultimately settling back in San Antonio, as a single mom. In 1976, while working as a medical transcriptionist at Lutheran General Hospital, she met her future husband, Charles R Settles Jr. They married in late 1976 and remained in San Antonio.
Patti had a lifelong passion for music. She taught herself to play the guitar and enjoyed getting together with many of her musical friends and playing songs popular to her generation. She worked many years in Human Resources and later in Information Systems at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland AFB and then at Medical Systems at Randolph AFB. She attended San Antonio College, learning American Sign Language and made many friends in the deaf community. For several years she used her ASL skills as an aide to special education children at Roosevelt High School. She left to help a family friend and musician, Bobby Flores, realize his dream, establishing Bulverde Academy of Music. She retired with her husband in 2015.
Patti was a joy to all she met, her ready smile and engaging manner a comfort to all her friends and acquaintances. Let it be known that Patti was the embodiment of a kind and loving spirit that cared personally for all she met. May she always be remembered so.
Patti is survived by her husband, Charles Ray Settles Jr.; her daughter, Rachel Settles Moore (William Tyler Moore III) and granddaughters, Ashlyn McKenzie Moore, Madelyn Macille Moore and Merilyn Jewel Moore; siblings, Susan Garza, Michael Hazel, Valerie Adachi, Laura Hazel, Elizabeth Cray and Jennifer Vollers.
Services and reception will be held at Porter Loring Funeral Home, 1101 McCullough Ave., San Antonio, Texas on December 21, 2023, at 10am. Private burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
