Patricia Ann Smith, age 90, passed away on April 4, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. Patricia Ann was born on September 10, 1932, in Oklahoma City to parents Eva Ellen Hageman and William T. Joyner. At the age of three, Pat’s father moved the family to Edinberg Texas where he built the Orange Courts travel motel and settled them into life in South Texas. It was here Pat developed her passion for reading and was known to routinely complete a book every day. She was well known by every librarian in every town in which she resided and jokingly commented she routinely had to change libraries because she read every book in the place. Pat completed high school at the age of 15 and began her college career at Texas A&I Junior College. She completed her college education at Southwest Texas State University at the age of 18.
She met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Smith, one Easter weekend when home from college. Bob was in town from Texas A&M and was immediately smitten by Pat. She and Bob were married after he completed his degree and was shipped off to New York City by the US Army to produce films for the war effort. Pat was a huge Texas A&M football fan; the family had season tickets for 71 years! During this time, she never left a single game before the clock clicked off the last second. She was even present for the famous 2018 LSU game that went nearly five hours and well past midnight; she was 86 years old. Pat always said Aggie football is unpredictable and you should never leave early.
Pat lived an amazingly full life with much travel. She visited every state in the country, every providence in Canada and covered much of Europe and Scandinavian counties. Pat loved God and recognized her biblical gift was clearly hospitality which she lived to share. She hosted bible studies and church circles in her home and always provided attendees with home baked goods. Family and friends remember her house as always smelling like cookies. When you were having a bad day, she would bake cookies to make you feel better. When you were having a good day, she baked cookies to celebrate. Pat rarely visited friends and neighbors without bringing baked goods.
Pat had a passion for volunteering which she ingrained in her children and grandchildren. She served as a Wednesday Docent at the San Antonio Zoo for twenty-five years. In addition, she served at the San Antonio Assistance League for twenty plus years as well. Pat’s love for animals extended to her golden retriever, Izzie. Izzie was mom’s sole mate and reason for living after Bob passed away in 2017. Izzie was never out of Pat’s reach or sight. The admiration was mutual.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Robert L. Smith and son Robert M. Smith. Patricia is survived by her daughters Christine Cabiness and husband Todd, and Rebecca Holmes and husband David; son Timothy W. Smith and wife Amy; grandchildren Bobby Vaden, Renee Holmes, Thomas Holmes, Bailey Smith and Barrett Smith; and great grandchildren Joseph Vaden and William Vaden. The family would like to express deep appreciation to mom’s caregivers Andrea Woods, Tiffany Nious, Renisha Childs and Candice Perez for the love and support you provided us all during mom’s final years.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
