Patrick moved to San Antonio in 1974 and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1980. During his school years, he was a dedicated athlete who played football as a split end and safety. He earned two letters, made All-District wide receiver, and was proud of his accomplishments on the field. Patrick will be remembered for his spirit, resilience and sense of humor. He was well liked and had a wide circle of friends. He formed friendships within all the social circles of Lee High School and was a sought-after addition to social events.
In 1980, at the age of 18, Patrick was the passenger in a Pontiac Trans Am which struck a telephone pole. He sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) which resulted in an 8-month coma. Patrick emerged from this coma to discover his life had drastically changed. In addition to the TBI, Patrick was paralyzed on his left side. It is a tribute to Partick’s physical strength and vitality that he was able to survive this accident and emerge from the coma. Patrick required a wheelchair for the remainder of his life and 24-hour care.
The wonderous aspect of Patrick was that so much of his personality, wit, and sense of humor remained unchanged. With assistance, he was still able to be transported to the homes of friends, movie theaters, football games, and other entertainment venues. Since Patrick required 24-hour care he resided at the Meadows Cottage of Mission Road Developmental Center in San Antonio. Patrick enjoyed socializing with the staff and the other residents of Meadows Cottage and his personality and sense of humor were greatly appreciated. Thanks are extended to the care staff of the Meadows Cottage and the Mission Road administrators and executives. A special thanks is given to Ms. Natalie Shipman for the extra attention she gave Patrick and other Meadows Cottage residents. Later Patrick resided at the Morningside Ministries at the Manor facility on Cloudcroft in San Antonio where excellent care was provided. Even though Patrick’s physical health declined he still retained all of his personality traits.
He is survived by his good friends Mark Doehne, Diane Rath and her daughter Reagan Rath, Michael Pantuso, Howard Newsome, Brett Richardson, and Debbie Hernandez in addition to many other friends.
