Heaven gained yet another angel. Colonel Paul H. Gottschalk, USAF, Ph.D., aka “Opa”, left us on Saturday, October 10, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Poland) on December 27, 1931. Col. Gottschalk was a beloved husband, father, Opa and friend. We will miss him greatly and he will be forever in our hearts.

Col. Gottschalk was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Klara Gottschalk; his siblings, and his daughter, Stephanie Gottschalk. He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Gottschalk, his children, Clifford Gottschalk, Diana Shields and husband Bruce, Jackie Lyerly, Patricia Shippey-Shaw and husband David, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Paul and his family immigrated to the U.S. after World War II. He later joined the United States Air Force where his assignments included a teaching post at the Air Force Academy and Directorship of the Academy Chapel Choir. Paul was an Honored Member, former Musical Director, Singer, Musician, and Composer of many songs. He directed the Liederkranz Men’s choir from 1992-2000. Paul was the guy that new the backstory of almost every song, and was happy to share those stories with those he knew. He was also a longtime member, and former Musical Director, of the Beethoven Männerchor. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 21st from 11:00 pm to 12:00 pm.
