It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul C. Speas, a wonderful man whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of everyone he encountered. He passed away on December 1, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by his family. Paul, who never met a stranger, embraced the world with open arms and left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
Paul was born on March 4, 1935, in Denver, Colorado to Alice and Clarence Speas. His life was defined by enduring love. He married his high school sweetheart, Bobbie Sue Longley on June 28, 1953, and for an incredible 70 years, their bond was an inspiration to all who witnessed it. Through the highs and lows of life, their commitment remained unwavering, creating a legacy of love that will continue to inspire others for many years to come. Paul told the story of seeing Bobbie Sue for the first time at a dance when he was 14 years old. He looked in the school hallways for her until he finally found her. Paul and Bobbie Sue were sweethearts for 73 years. He told her every night without fail, “I still love you, Bobbie Sue.” Paul was often asked “What is the secret to such long marriage?” In keeping with his sense of humor, his answer was always “It’s a secret.”
As a devoted father, Paul always set the best example for his children. His guidance, wisdom, and unconditional love was always there for his family and his devotion never wavered. Paul's greatest joy, however, came from the laughter and love he shared with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever.
Beyond his family, Paul's innate ability to connect with others made him a beloved figure in his community. His genuine smile, warm heart, and willingness to lend a helping hand endeared him to all who crossed his path. Paul's impact reached far and wide, a testament to the extraordinary life he led. His years spent working for H-E-B Grocery Company were incredibly special to him. He met many wonderful people during his working years and had great stories to tell. He made many special friendships along the way which he treasured. His wonderful friends visited him while he was ill and brightened his spirits with each visit.
Though our hearts ache at the loss of such a beloved soul, let us remember Paul for the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the legacy of compassion he leaves behind. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration as we celebrate his extraordinary life. All will miss his wit and humor as well as his kind and gentle manner.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Alice Warner and Rita Arlene Hitchcock and brother John Speas. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bobbie Sue Speas; children, Steven C. Speas, Barbara S. Seta, and Lori L. Katz (Wayne). Grandchildren Jeremy Vogel (Karen), Shelly Seta, Jonathon Speas, Stefani Weber (Jason), Cody Katz (Jennifer), Kimberly Davis, Kasey Elder (Joe) and Sean Katz; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
