Peggy was born June 10, 1948, in Kosciusko, MS to Cecil and Margie Burrell. She graduated from Pickens County High School in 1966 and attended Mississippi University for Women, graduating from Livingston University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Physical Science. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Alabama and a Master of Education from Southwest Texas State University. Peggy was a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal in Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, and Texas. In 2010, she retired from Northeast ISD as the principal of Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. Middle School.
Peggy began singing with the Sweet Adelines International Alamo Metro Chorus in 1990 and enjoyed 30 years of music and dance with the ensemble. She joined the front row of AMC and spent many hours learning the choreography to bring the music to life. In 2014, she was awarded the Spirit of Harmony for her dedication with grant writing and fundraising for the chorus. In retirement, Peggy enjoyed spending time in her garden and with her beloved, spoiled corgis. She was an avid gardener, canning and preserving an array of produce and willingly supplying her friends and neighbors with her bountiful harvest. Peggy enjoyed travel and had visited many countries. During her last adventure abroad, she visited her daughter and son-in-law in Australia. She lived life to the fullest, enjoying time with family and friends, bringing laughter and happiness wherever she went.
She was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her parents, her brother John Burrell, and her sister Bettye Burkhalter.
She is survived by her daughter Jenny Crabtree Brandon and her husband Mark; son Jay Clemons, his wife Heidi, and grandchildren Kyle and Rebecca; and her beloved corgis Diva and Duke. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Boyd Burkhalter; nieces Angie Henderson and April Blount; great niece Katie Griffin; and many other special friends and loved ones.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in her name to the North Texas Corgi Connection (ntxcorgiconnection.org) or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (bcrf.org).
