Peter was born in Wiesbaden, Germany to John Dyer and Jo Mae Passano on May 20, 1961. While his father was serving in the military, Peter enjoyed the typical life of an ‘army brat’ traveling through Europe and Asia and living in Tehran, the capital of Iran, for two years.
Peter attended Kent School in Connecticut and graduated in 1979. He entered Kent as a freshman (third former) and went the full 4 years earning the title of ‘4 Year Man.’ Peter’s roommate and best friend was Scott Busby whose father was Dad’s old roommate. Peter did well at Kent; he was on the JV and varsity football team and wrote for the school paper. Peter helped plan the Senior Party for his class. Upon graduating, he attended Bryant College in Rhode Island and University of Texas in Austin where he earned a BA in International Business in 1984.
After completing his education, Peter returned to China Grove and worked with his father as second-in-command of the ranch and Hero's Ice and Feed until the store’s closure in 2020. Peter was an avid collector of books, music, comics, guns and devices. A highly sensitive and private man who loved nostalgia, history, politics, and stories, Peter enjoyed going to estate sales looking for bargains. He was perceptive and appreciated a ‘rare’ find and he was a thoughtful gift giver so estate sales offered him the opportunity to discreetly open his heart and give to the people who mattered most to him.
Peter enjoyed eating out in small, local, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and many times he would suggest great places to eat. He also was a passionate concert goer. Peter’s musical tastes were broad, ranging from bluegrass, southern rock, Texas swing, jazz, to punk, blues, soul, and even classical. He attended well over 100 concerts in his lifetime and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of music that he wanted to share with others.
While known for his wicked sense of humor, Peter also had a surprisingly reflective nature. Though he was committed to his beliefs and had strong opinions, his 'inner circle' knew that he was willing to acknowledge in honest reflection both challenges and successes.
Peter continued to be present and strong for Mom and Dad throughout his lifetime. He was committed to his responsibilities on the ranch taking care of the cattle and running Hero’s. He always made time for his many friends and was concerned for others' well being.
Peter is survived by his father, John Dyer, his brother Michael and sister-in-law, Carol, his sister, Toni and his nieces and nephews, Sean, Megan, Omar and Raavi. He is preceded in death by his loving mother, Jo Mae and grandparents Dorothy and Ivan Watkins of China Grove, and Grace Passano of Wiscasset, Maine.
