

Peter Michael Romell, age 81, passed away on February 5, 2026, at his home in Austin, TX. Peter was born on July 23, 1944, in San Antonio, TX, to Michael Peter Romell and Mary Makris Romell, both born in Greece. He attended Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. He graduated with a Bachelor of History from the University of Texas at San Antonio in May 1977. He married Barbara Ann Schimelpfening Romell in January 1972; the couple had twins, Melissa Marie Romell and Michael Robert Romell, in 1973, and James Brian Romell in 1976.
Peter served in the Army Reserves for 13 years, from 1968 to 1981. He spent his early career as one of the first play-by-play callers for the San Antonio Spurs basketball team, and went on to have several other roles in radio. Peter was a passionate fan of the Texas Longhorns (Hook ‘Em), following pretty much every sport played at the university. His friends and family will remember him as a man who never met a stranger.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael Peter Romell and Mary Makris Romell. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Romell; his sister, Vana Romell White; his children, Melissa (Theo) Romell, Michael (Celeste) Romell, and James (Ariel) Romell; and grandchildren, Callen Cameron Romell, Brendon Michael Romell, and Campbell Vinson Romell.
