

Phil A. Grothues, age 97, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, April 26, 2011. He was a prominent member of the San Antonio business community as the owner of Guadalupe Lumber Company which was established in 1933 by himself and his father. Phil and Agnes, his loving wife of 70 years, were founding members of the Belgian-American Club and St. Luke's Catholic Church in San Antonio. They are also longtime members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes. Phil was also a member of the Knights of Columbus throughout his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marianus and Maria VanDenBerghe Grothues; brothers, Al Grothues, Maurice Grothues, John Grothues, and Joe Grothues and Henrietta. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Michiels Grothues; children, Phil Grothues and wife, Marlene, Elaine Sachey and husband, Thomas, Susan Simmons, and Mark Grothues and wife, Carmen; grandchildren, Greg Grothues and wife Gina, Debbie Grothues, Carol Whilden and husband, Robert, Laura Stewart and husband, Edward, Brian Grothues, Joe Sachey and wife, Monica, Christine Myers, Jennifer Simmons, Kimberly Simmons, Kyle Grothues, and Kevin Grothues; great grandchildren, Kristen and Cole Grothues, Kendon and Kirkland Connally, Allie and Lindsey Whilden, Mya and Eli Sachey, Abby and Joshua Myers; brother, Arthur Grothues and wife, Paula; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Grothues, Elsie Grothues, and Margie Grothues; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and past and present employees of Guadalupe Lumber Company. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 28, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Helotes.

Interment in San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery II. The family would like to express their gratitude for the love and care received from Christus Hospice and NIX Private Care.
