Jack was born to Andrew Frank Toomes and Beryl Layne (Woolverton) Toomes on June 30, 1949, in Alexandria, Virginia. He grew up in Alexandria with his parents and sister. His father’s tragic death when Jack was 18 left a profound impact on his life. Though his mother’s influence remained strong, the loss of his father was significant. During this time, Pastor Gerald Hall (Annandale, VA) became a guiding figure, offering friendship and mentorship. Under Pastor Hall’s guidance, Jack came to a saving faith in Christ and later pursued a degree in Pastoral Studies, serving as a Youth Pastor for many years.
He graduated from WT Woodson High School in 1968 and earned degrees from Virginia Commonwealth College, Trinity College (Deerfield, IL), and Washington Bible College in Lanham, MD. He married Janet Lee (Anderson) Toomes in 1976, and together they lived for many years in Northern Virginia before relocating briefly to Houston and Pittsburgh, eventually settling in San Antonio, Texas. They raised two children: Meredith Aimee (Toomes) Lopez and Erik Ryan Toomes.
Jack was a talented artist and sculptor, known for his clever cartoons and puppet creations. He loved scuba diving, rock climbing, and rappelling, and he enjoyed teaching these skills to his youth group kids. An avid competitive cyclist, Jack was a member of a college bicycle racing team. His dry, sometimes irreverent sense of humor and appreciation for simple things made him beloved by many. He never sought the spotlight, finding happiness in reading his Bible or a Patrick O’Brian novel, or riding his motorcycle. Motorcycle trips to New Mexico with Janni, his brother-in-law Bill, and Bill’s wife Debbie, became a cherished annual tradition.
Later in life, Jack built a successful career in commercial construction as a glazer, specializing in caulking. He took great pride in his work and cherished the friendships he formed with his "work family" at Architectural Division 8 Company, where he worked for nearly seven years.
While Jack was a skilled and loyal team member in his professional life, his deepest passion was his faith, which he shared boldly and sincerely. His greatest desire was to love the Lord wholeheartedly and to live a life of service and sacrifice to others.
He is survived by his loving wife, daughter, son, two grandsons, sister, brother, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his mother- and father-in-law, and most recently by his brother-in-law.
A memorial service is scheduled for March 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Oak Hills Church (South room), 19595 IH 10 W, San Antonio, TX 78257. A light reception will immediately follow. Rev. Dr. Gregory Schneeberger will officiate the ceremony.
