Phoebe Jo Hardt Rogers was born to Ernest William Hardt and Leona Love Hardt on July 25, 1930, in a farmhouse in Medina County, Texas. Her father was born January 29, 1904, in New Fountain, Texas, and her mother was born August 1, 1903, in Devine, Texas. Her father worked for Magnolia Oil, and the family eventually ended up in Freer, Texas, during the oil boom of the 1940’s.
Phoebe attended Freer High School, and there she met Martin Fredrick “Fred” Rogers, Jr., who was born in Hebbronville, Texas, on August 27, 1929. They dated in high school and were married on June 28, 1947. They had two daughters (Carla and Diana) and one son (Martin F. Rogers, III).
Fred spent 40+ years working with Exxon Mobile Oil Company, and Phoebe lived with him in various places in Texas, Alaska and California before they retired back to Texas. They also lived in Malaysia for about three months while he was on assignment there. Phoebe loved travel and her favorite destination was Israel, which she visited thirteen times. She also visited Norway, England, Thailand, and Canada. She instilled a deep love of travel in her family and took her grandchildren on so many adventures.
Phoebe was a loving person who always thought about others and their feelings more than she did about herself. She served the Kingdom of God with her time and finances as a dedicated Christian and church worker. She was a daily Bible reader and fierce prayer warrior for the needs of her family and friends. She was an active member of AGLOW for many years. She led many of her family and friends to the Lord and taught her family that Jesus is the cornerstone of our lives.
Phoebe’s relatives included Andrew Kent who rode with the Immortal 32 from Gonzales to take a final stand at the Alamo along with Travis, Bowie and Crockett. Her ancestors through Adam Zumalt lived on the land during the Republic of Texas, and this qualified Phoebe to become a member of the local Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Phoebe is preceded in death by her mother and father, her only sister, Willie Lea Laughery, and by her husband, youngest daughter and only son. She is survived in death by her daughter Carla Miller of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, and daughter-in-law Carol Rogers of Kingsville, Texas. Great, great grandchildren include Sage Repka of Havre de Grace, Maryland.
Her grandchildren affectionately called her G-MA, which was short for Grandma. All of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss her dearly. She was the matriarch of the family who always introduced all of us to many new adventures. She had a wonderful sense of humor and told many funny stories.
