Phyllis Ann Bright, age 74, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on February 13, 1949, to her parents, Myrtle Mask and Frank Morris, Jr. in San Antonio, TX. She also had one brother, Wayne Bundy.
Her father and mother met and married while Frank was stationed here in San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston in the U.S. Army, and they started their family. She attended school in what is now San Antonio Independent School District. Growing up, she enjoyed traveling to visit extended family in New York and Pennsylvania, where her father originated from, and also vacationing to California. Some of her warmest memories with her family included gardening with her father, and him tending to his beautiful large roses. One warm recollection she would fondly reminisce about was of her father explaining to her that a “scary” looking thorn bush was not going to attack her when she was a very young girl. Phyllis always got a good laugh when she told that story. In 1982 she met her future husband, Jack Douglas Bright. They married and gave birth to two children: Cassandra and Christopher.
Phyllis was a strong believer in God, and for most of her life attended Baptist churches. One of her favorite responses to most remarkable life events was “God works in mysterious ways,” and she believed that entirely. She also loved to read the Bible and composed some of her own spiritual poetry later in life.
Phyllis focused on home health care for several years, and then retired from the field in her 60s. She would often think back about her clients, as she genuinely enjoyed their company. She truly loved to laugh by watching a sitcom, a comedic standup performance, a good movie, or just by cracking her own jokes. Phyllis adored fishing and was a good bowler. She won several bowling games while snowed in with her family during the great Christmas blizzard (Buffalo, NY) of 2022. Phyllis liked to read a good book, especially thrillers, and could never put down a Mary Higgins Clark novel. Additionally, she loved art- particularly drawing and painting, and would often paint craft items such as bird houses (which also went with her sincere love for animals). Her love of Mexican food or a good burger was something she also enjoyed.
In her final years, she was most excited and proud to become a Grandmother and took that role very seriously. She loved her grandson, Rey Douglas Sauceda, or as she called him, her little “Huggy Bear” with all of her heart and soul. She thoroughly enjoyed spoiling him and would always comment that “sweet children like him are meant to be spoiled while they’re little.”
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband, Jack Douglas Bright. She is survived by her daughter, Cassandra Sauceda; son-in-law, Rey Sauceda; grandson, Rey Douglas Sauceda; and son, Christopher. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the San Antonio Humane Society https://sahumane.org/
