

Born November 16, 1931 in Paris, Texas, he grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Carter Riverside High School. He went to Texas Wesleyan University on a basketball scholarship, graduated with a B.A. degree, went to Southwest Texas for his Master's and then did graduate work above his Master's. R.E. came to San Antonio in 1956 to coach basketball at North East High School later MacArthur High School. He was principal of Krueger Middle School, Director of Federal Programs and retired from North East School District as Director of Personnel.
He was President of Alamo Heights Optimist Club, Governor of South Central District of Optimist International, and in 1999-2000 served as Vice President of Optimist International. R.E. was chairman of the Optimist All-Star Basketball Games for ten years - helping many young people get college scholarships. He was an active member of St. Andrews Methodist Church and loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Martha Jean; daughter, Sallisue; son-in-law, Gary Mearse; and Grandy to two wonderful grandsons, Mason and Matthew Mearse. The family wishes to express special thanks to Lillie Andri and Michael Markowski for their help for the last three years.
A special thanks to the members of the Alamo Heights Optimist Club and the Wednesday night poker group for the love, help and pleasure they gave to R.E. during his illness.
