

Rafael, a proud United States Marine and devoted family man, passed away on April 11, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born on December 2, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served his country with honor and distinction during the Vietnam War, from December 13, 1965, to December 12, 1968.
He entered the Marine Corps as a Private (E-1) and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant (E-5). During his service, he was awarded several medals and commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Marksmanship Badge for the M-14 Rifle.
Rafael fought bravely to protect our nation, just as fiercely as he protected and provided for his family. A true hero both at home and abroad, he leaves behind a legacy of strength, dedication, and countless cherished memories.
Rafael was known for his infectious sense of humor. He was the biggest jokester - always ready with a clever joke or funny story. He took great joy in making others smile, often turning even the most ordinary moments into ones filled with laughter. Whether with family, friends, or strangers, Rafael’s humor and playful spirit created memories that will last forever.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rafael Cardenas is preceded in death by his parents, Jose Cardenas and Carmen Sepulveda.
He is survived by his loving wife, Josefina Leos Cardenas; his daughter, Irene Watson (Dennis); his daughter, Michelle Cardenas (Erik); and his son, Rafael Cardenas Jr. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Monique Sharpe (Jon), John Osborn Jr. (Gabby), Nevaeh Guillen (Andrew), and Giselle Guillen (Rene). Rafael was also joyfully awaiting the arrival of his great-granddaughter, Aurora Josefina Quinones.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1st, at Porter Loring Mortuary, with a Prayer service to follow at 7:00 p.m.
A funeral service will take place from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m on Friday, May 2nd, at Porter Loring Mortuary, immediately followed by a procession to Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery where Rafael will be laid to rest with military honors.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Watson, John Osborn Jr., Erik Quinones, Rene Quinones, Andrew Ortiz, Julio Constancia.
