Ralph Hernandez

Rafael Ralph Hernandez passed away on Friday, February 25, 2011 in the loving arms of his daughters, Sandra and Nancy. Ralph was born in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Arturo Hernandez and Lucila Gonzalez Hernandez.

He is survived by his beautiful wife, Idilia Lili; his loving daughters, Sandra Gonzalez Yedor and her husband, Jonathan Yedor, Nancy Hernandez, Marissa Garcia and her husband, Enrique Tomas Garcia, Sr.; his beloved grandchildren Marissa Marissita and Enrique Tomas Kike Garcia, Jr.; his loving sisters Rachel Hahn and Rebecca Becky Trevino and her husband, Gene Trevino; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ralph graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1945. He served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Ralph was a butcher, a grocer and, most notably, a restaurateur. In September, 1963 Ralph and Lili converted a meat market located on the corner of Rigbsy and South Hackberry into The Little Red Barn Steakhouse. There were 6 picnic tables. Ralph was the butcher, cook and general manager. Lili was the hostess and cashier. In the years that followed, "The Little Red Barn" became a San Antonio institution, serving its trademark "over a 1000 steaks a day "to politicians, judges, power brokers and the community that embraced it.

Ralph was "bigger than life" and life accepted with joy his open and gregarious ways. He loved his family, his wide circle of friends, and classical mariachi music. He was "Don Rafael", a "giant", "Mr. H", and the unquestioned patriarch of the family that adored him.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Schnitzler, Maria Christina Rodriquez, Dr. Lon Smith, and the physicians and staff of MD Anderson and Methodist Hospital who did so much and gave so caringly.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
