

Ramón L. Barreda, Jr., 73, of San Antonio, went to rest in everlasting joy with his Creator on Jan. 27, 2014. He was born in Laredo, TX, on April 11, 1940, to Olga Ramirez Barreda and Ramón L. Barreda, Sr. He attended Martin High School in Laredo and in 1962, obtained his Radio Telephone Operator License in Dallas, TX. In 1965, Ramón married Hilda Sauceda Barreda and moved to San Antonio, where he continued in his profession as a television control room operator for 43 years. The majority of those years were spent at KSAT 12 News.
Ramón was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and volunteer for numerous church and community organizations, including ACTS Missions, the Catholic Charismatic Movement, Cursillo, Marriage Encounter and Hospice. He was a lifelong health and fitness enthusiast and at various times in his life jogged, practiced yoga, played tennis and bowled, no matter the weather or the circumstances. He loved eating at local restaurants – particularly Indian – with his family and friends. Ramón, known affectionately as “Papa Sam” to his grandchildren and their friends, had a great sense of humor and a gift for making people feel comfortable quickly. Papa Sam never met a stranger.
He is preceded in death by his mother, father, and sisters Cynthia Marie Barreda and Sylvia Barreda Hale. He leaves his wife of 48 years, Hilda Sauceda Barreda; daughters, Hileana Barreda Jaime and her husband Lee, Marisa Barreda Lipscher and her husband Randolph; son Carlos Xavier Barreda and his wife Leonor; six grandchildren, Andres Javier “AJ” Garcia, Sarah Ann Garcia, Carlos Daniel Garcia, Raine Lauren Lipscher, Francesco Xavier Barreda and Aidan Storm Lipscher; sister Olga Lucila Barreda Alvarado and her husband Agustin; and brother Ernesto Barreda.
Public visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, followed by a rosary at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1321 El Paso St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in Ramón’s honor to the American Cancer Research Center & Foundation at http://acrcf.org or by calling 1-888-458-6660.
