

Raul graduated from Benavides High School in 1958, and after some time off, he continued his education at Texas A&I University in Kingsville, TX receiving a Bachelor of Science in Education (English-Spanish) in 1964. He also received a Master of Science degree in Bilingual-Bicultural Education and Sociology from Texas A & I in 1976. He began teaching in San Isidro in 1964, where he met his beloved wife Nellina. Along with teaching English, Spanish and Texas History, as the Head Basketball Coach, Raul led teams to several championships. He was also an Asst. Football Coach and put many students behind the wheel as the Driver’s Ed teacher. Raul coached U.I.L. Academics for several years and took many students to the State Championships. After retirement in 1994, he spent many a day deer hunting, as well as traveling the world with Nellina and friends. He also served on the Board of The Bank of South Texas for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carlos Ruiz; and beloved wife of 43 years, Nellina G. Ruiz. Raul is survived by his children, Marissa Anelle Ruiz of San Antonio, Texas and Raul David Ruiz and wife Sandra Rivera of Austin, Texas; sister, Maria Isabel Benavides of Concepcion, Texas; brother, Ramiro Ruiz of Sharyland, Texas; as well as numerous extended family members and a lifetime of friends.
