Dr. Ricardo Benavides-Lillo, retired professor of Spanish and Spanish literature at UTSA, died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 2 P.M. He was born in Santiago, Chile on February 15, 1929 and studied in Chile, Germany and Spain. Dr. Benavides first came to UTSA as a consultant for curricula in 1972, after a distinguished career of teaching in universities in Chile, Europe, and the United States. He subsequently served at UTSA in various capacities, including Department Chairman of Foreign Languages. He retired in 1997. Dr. Benavides authored three books on Spanish literature, published twenty-one articles, wrote twenty-nine essays and translated eight works from French, English and German to Spanish. Among his awards was the "Order of Don Quixote", conferred by Sigma Delta Pi in 1969. He is survived by his wife, Marta Benavides; two stepchildren; and a sister and daughter in Chile.
