Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Carmen Salinas, his stepfather, Belester Salinas, his sisters, Isabel Pecan and Rosa G. Martinez, and his brother, Rolando Salinas. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Annabelle Pena, and his children: Michael Cerna and wife Teresa, Deborah Leffew and husband Tim, Jerry Pena and wife Crusita, and Tony Pena and wife Meredith. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren: Victoria Cerna (Sierra), Francine Diaz (Miguel), Jonathan Guzman (Priscilla), Jordan Guzman (Raven), Jacob Guzman (Jasmine), Levi Pena, Isaac Pena, Madisyn Pena, and Maggie Collins, and great-grandchildren: Annalise, Nathaniel, Lailah, Lilliane, London, Miguel, Ilias, Sophie, Jaxon, Avery, Rory, and Madelyn.
He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, class of 1963, and dedicated 25 years to serving as a police officer with the San Antonio Police Department. Richard will be remembered for his patience, kindness, and his passion for family gatherings, whether at the Pena house or Blanco State Park.
Richard took pleasure in yard work, tile and floor work, and was an avid collector of coins. In his younger days, he loved fishing and cheering for his favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs.
Richard was a simple man who believed in second chances, forgiveness, and seeing the best in everyone. Known for giving the best life lessons, he loved unconditionally and was always there to support those in need, even providing financial support from the "Bank of Richard Pena". He would give the shirt off his back to anyone. He was rarely angry and rarely yelled. He will always be remembered for hating onions of any kind, but was spoiled by his wife and never had to eat leftovers.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, located at 6321 Bandera Road, San Antonio, TX, on January 10, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A memorial service will take place on the same day at 6:00 pm at the same location.
Richard will be sorely missed by all who knew him, and his legacy of love and teaching will forever live on in our hearts.
