Richard Dean Hammock was born on October 14, 1982 in Corpus Christi, TX, to Gayle Hensley and Richard McKenzie. Richard was raised with great support of his grandparents John and Elsie Hensley. Gayle was remarried to Kyle Dean Hammock in 1989 who later adopted Richard at the age of 7. After a brief stay in New Orleans where his sister Megan Elizabeth Hammock was born in 1990, the family returned to Corpus Christi. While in Corpus Christi, Richard earned his Eagle Scout with the help and support of his grandfather John Hensley. Richard was part of Boy Scout troop #11, where his grandfather John Hensley and his Uncle Bill Hensley had also been members over the years. In 1996 Richard's cousin Brittany Hensley came to live with Richard and his family to be raised as his sister. The family then moved to San Antonio where Richard attended Stevenson Middle School, O'Connor High School and Marshal High School where he graduated in 2001. Richard then attended UTSA where he met and married Julie Kara Balfour and soon after they were blessed with their first child Jessica Lynn Hammock in 2002. In 2003 Richard began his career with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office when he was accepted into the Sheriff's Academy. In 2007 Richard and Julie were blessed with their son Ethan Michael Hammock. Shortly after Ethan's birth Richard and Julie separated. Richard met Melissa Ann Gibbs and was married to her July 18, 2009 at University United Methodist Church. Throughout his career with the Sheriff's office Richard obtained the rank of Cpl and later Sgt in the detention division. In 2012 Richard and Melissa were blessed with a son Travis Hensley Hammock. Richard then was accepted to the Patrol academy at the Bexar County Sheriff's office in 2014 and graduated February of 2015. On June 11, 2015 Richard demonstrated his courage and valor in the line of duty by saving the lives of multiple Deputies in a critical shooting incident. This is only one of many occasions where Richard displayed true heroism. At the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas (CLEAT), convention in El Paso Richard was awarded the Medal of Valor and Officer of the Year Awards for his actions. Richard continued to show honor, respect and courage to the Sheriff's Department, fellow officers and his community until he went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2016.
