

He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years. Lt. Col. Murphy began his Air Force Career as an air weapons controller and progressed into various senior systems acquisition leadership positions. He served in Canada, Hancock AFB in Syracuse, Germany, Kessler AFB in Mississippi, Hanscom AFB in Boston, Andrews AFB, the Pentagon, and in Thailand during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was a member for many years in the Military Officers Association of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard J. Murphy, Sr. and Helen Cashion Murphy.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary Kathleen Rice; children, Richard J. Murphy III and wife Roseanne, Stephen Murphy and wife Coreen, and Mark Murphy; grandchildren, Ryan Murphy, Kyle Murphy, Sean Murphy, Galen Murphy, Caroline Murphy and Alexandra Murphy; sister, Mary Murphy; brother, Michael Murphy and wife Donna; nieces and nephews, Beth Fuller, John Megna, Paula Cassala, and Ellen Harker, Erin and Michael Murphy. He was also very fond of his former daughter-in-laws Amy Murphy and Michelle Murphy.
