Richard M. Mendoza, age 84, passed away on May 23, 2026 in San Antonio, TX.
Richard was born on July 1, 1941 in San Antonio to Guillermo and Juanita Mendoza. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1963 and on July 27, 1971, he married Velia Sierra and shared 38 years of marriage. He lived a life of devotion to his beloved wife, Velia. Though they had no children, he was a treasured uncle, brother, friend, and neighbor.
He proudly worked for Brooks Army Air Force Base in the Analytical Services Division as a lab technician and retired after 29 years of dedicated service. He valued time spent with family, enjoyed taking pictures and videos, loved bowling and the companionship of friends and neighbors.
A devoted Catholic, he remained an active member of the Eucharistic Ministry as a Sacristan for St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. He received the Lumen Gentium Award through the church in February 2nd of 2023. One of the clearest reflections of who he was could be seen in his devotion to the church. Serving at the altar was never simply a duty to him, it was an expression of his faith and his love for God and for his church community. He believed in showing up, helping others, and serving with humility and grace.
He is survived by his brother Guillermo Mendoza and wife Lydia of San Antonio, Texas, and his sister, Amelia Menchaca of San Antonio, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Velia, whom he cherished deeply throughout their years together; his brothers, Louis Aguilar, Armando Aguilar, and Martin Aguilar; and his sisters, Margaret Suarez and Juanita Granado.
He leaves behind his loving family, many dear friends, fellow parishioners, and neighbors who will miss him greatly and cherish the memories they shared together.
