Mr. Richard K. Thompson, age 74, passed away August 16, 2021, after a valiant fight with lung cancer. Richard was born in Louisiana, graduated from Midland Lee High School and pursued a bachelor’s degree at Texas Tech University. In 1968 he married the love of his life, B’Linda. After graduating in 1972, he received his commission in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served for 20 years.
Richard is survived by his wife of 53 years, B’Linda; daughter, Beth; son, Walter and daughter-in-law, Karen; grandsons, Hunter, and Jackson; and brother, Paul. Family was most important to Richard – he was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and brother.
Richard retired from the Army in 1992 and went to work as a contractor on the Pentagon Renovation project. They were just finishing the first wedge when the terrorists struck on 9/11. He officially retired when he and B’Linda relocated to Texas in 2006.
Richard never met a stranger and was involved in numerous charitable and social organizations including the Freemasons and Shriners International, where he could use his many talents to help others. He was an active member of the Oriental Band, The Golf Club, and the Shotgun Club among others.
He loved bright colors, jokes, telling stories, Hawaiian shirts, and golf (most days). He would go out of his way to pay a compliment to a harried wait person, tell a joke to lighten someone’s mood, or offer handshakes, hugs, and any other support to those who needed it.
Services are pending.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Shriners Hospitals, the American Cancer Society, or the American Lung Association.
