

Richard Albert Viscarra Jr., a devoted husband, father, and veteran, tragically passed away on Friday, June 21, 2024, at the age of 42, in Somerset, Texas. His life was marked by service, both in the United States Navy and through his dedicated work with the American GI Forum, where he tirelessly advocated for and supported fellow veterans in need.
Richard was born on October 19, 1981, in El Paso, Texas to Richard Albert Viscarra Sr. and Angela Yvonne Gutierrez. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, where he developed a deep sense of loyalty to his family, friends, and community. After attending Andress High School he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his enlistment he served on the USS Harry S. Truman Battleship serving his country with honor and distinction for 7 years. His time in the military shaped his strong sense of duty and commitment to serving others, values he carried throughout his life.
Following his military service, Richard found his calling in helping veterans navigate the challenges of civilian life. He worked at American GI as a security guard in the Veterans dormitory. His compassionate nature and unwavering dedication earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones and the community he served so selflessly.
Richard was preceded in death by his grandfather, Tony Gutierrez whom he loved very dearly and would call Papo. Richard is survived by his loving wife, April Viscarra; his children, Devon, Joaquin, and Jordan Viscarra; stepchildren, Gabriel and Janis Martinez; siblings, Gabby, Lindsey, and Bobby; and numerous extended family members and friends in El Paso and San Antonio. He will be remembered for his kindness, courage, and unwavering commitment to his fellow veterans.
Richard's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, forever cherished and dearly missed. May he rest in peace, knowing he made a profound difference in the lives of so many.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, July 5, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave, San Antonio, TX 78212.
