

"Woody" as he prefers enlisted in the marines on Nov. 14, 1940 at Cincinnati, OH and was sent to Parris Island, SC for basic training. Served on board USS Washington from date of commissioning May 1941 in American and European areas to August 15, 1942. Joined the 4th Marine Div. in 1943 at Camp Lejeune, NC. Participated in the Battle of Saipan, June 15, 1944, and Iwo Jima, Feb. 19, 1945, as senior NCO for Div. TQM Hqs. Co., Hqs Bn.. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation for Iwo Jima and then transferred to staff of Ad Com Phib Pac. Discharged Oct 26, 1945 at Mare Island, CA with rank of supply sergeant.
His career in civilian life was that of a petroleum land man leasing land for oil and gas in New York, Illinois, Michigan, California, and Texas, retiring in Houston from Templeton Energy Inc. in 1981.
He was married to the first girl he ever knew, Eleanor Logue, "The Girl Next Door." After enjoying four years in Grand Junction, CO, they moved to New Braunfels, TX.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Yanaway.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy L. Wolk of Wisconsin; and son, James Yanaway of San Antonio.
