Robert Ewing Goodwin

Born in 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Ewing K. Goodwin and Lucy Bell Olinger, Robert grew up to serve his country and build a dedicated life of service. Following his graduation from George Washington High School in Alexandria, Virginia in June 1950, he answered the call of duty and entered the U.S. Navy in August 1950. He served honorably during the Korean War until his discharge in June 1954.

After his military service, Robert began a successful career, first working for the American Automobile Association in Alexandria, Virginia, and later transferring with the company to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Upon returning to Alexandria, he transitioned into men's business clothing sales with The Hecht Company. On June 6, 1975, he married the love of his life, Jean Erickson, with whom he shared 28 beautiful years of marriage until her passing on July 6, 2003.

In the summer of 1988, Robert and Jean relocated to San Antonio, Texas, where he continued his career in men's apparel at Dillard's until his retirement in 2010. A man of deep faith, Robert was an active member of the local faith community, attending MacArthur Park Lutheran Church for many years before later transferring his membership to Abiding Presence Lutheran Church. In his later years, he sold his home and moved into The Waterford at Thousand Oaks. His fellow residents there fondly knew him as a bit crusty on the outside, but a true teddy bear at heart.

His family and friends will remember him for his steady presence, his warmth, and his kindness.

Robert was preceded in death by his beloved parents; his wife, Jean Elizabeth Erickson Goodwin; and his sister, Lois A. Moran. His memory will be cherished by his surviving family, including his two stepsons, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and his niece and nephew.

A Celebration of Life with military honors will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Shelter 5, on July 16, 2026, at 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing
