It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Taylor Harper, Jr., an honorable Emeritus of Architecture with high integrity, devoted husband and father. He passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by family.
Robert was born on December 18, 1930, in San Antonio to Dorothy and Robert Harper. He was destined for greatness and pursued his passion for work from a young age, beginning by helping his father in his restaurant supply business. While still in high school, Bob worked for architects during evenings and weekends. Due to limited financial circumstances, he did not go to college but continued his education by working for several prestigious architects and engineers. He enjoyed the challenges of engineering so much that he requested the right to sit for the Structural Engineer licensing exams and passed in March of 1976. Just four years later, he requested the right to take the Architectural exams and again, passed both to earn his Architectural license.
Robert was known for his precision, dedication, and innovative approach to design and construction. His projects, which spanned across Texas and the Southwest, stood as testaments to his expertise and commitment to quality. His work not only enhanced the safety and functionality of countless buildings but also contributed significantly to the City of San Antonio’s development and progress.
In June of 1963, Robert married the love of his life, Betty Dietel. Their union was a testament to love's enduring power that thrived for six decades, a rare and beautiful accomplishment in today's world. Their love story was filled with fun, laughter, shared dreams, and unwavering support, that served as an inspiration to all who knew them. He was a man of simple pleasures, finding joy in the everyday moments he shared with his family. Whether it was a family dinner, a holiday gathering, or just a quiet evening at home, he cherished every moment spent together. His warmth and wisdom were ever-present, a source of strength and guidance for his children and a constant reminder of the love he held for his wife.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Ruth Cox. Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Ann Harper; sons, Byron Scott Harper (Linda) and Bryce Sean Harper; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary and funeral mass will be held at 9:30 am on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 10703 Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, TX 78230. Interment will follow at 11:30 am, Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78209.
