Born in Marshall, Texas, Bob grew up in the era of Jim Crow but never let the circumstances of his time define his potential. He graduated from Wiley College during a period when opportunities for Black men were severely limited and went on to break barriers in the business world. In the early 1950s, he became one of the first Black salesmen for the American Tobacco Company. Armed with a "Positive Mental Attitude" (PMA)—a philosophy he instilled in his children—he would walk into businesses that were often hostile to his presence, relying on charm, persistence, and professionalism to win them over.
Bob later built a successful career as a traveling textile salesman for Coats & Clark, a role that eventually took him to the West Coast. It was while visiting a department store account in Los Angeles that he met the love of his life, Mary Alice Knapp. They married in 1971 and moved to San Antonio, forging a life together that defied the prejudices of the time. In 1993, they launched M.A. Beauty Supply, growing the family business into a beloved staple of the community.
A man of deep conviction, Bob was defined by his devout faith in God, his regular attendance at Prince of Peace, and his charitable spirit. He possessed a simple, profound wisdom and was known for sharing colorful stories that left you laughing and having learned something at the same time. Bob lived by the advice he often gave his children: "Be honest and do the right thing." He believed in hard work, personal responsibility, and the promise of America. He was fiercely protective of his family and remained a devoted partner to Mary Alice for over 50 years, demonstrating a love that said, "I'm not going to stop," no matter the challenge.
He is survived by his four children: Robert, Charley (Ruth), Liz, and Will (Lynlie); eight grandchildren: Lakesha, Robin, Kayla, Salijah, Jacob, Naomi, Madolyn, Simone; and six great-grandchildren: RJ, Kyrie, Xaki, Xyon, Kendrix, Laila. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, love, and the enduring power of a positive attitude.
