An endlessly curious student of history, science, and sports, Robert “Bob” Vaughan Mabe passed away on October 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family—just a couple of weeks shy of his 79th birthday.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, on November 5, 1946, to William Robert “Bob” Mabe and Martha Ann “Vicki” Vaughan Mabe, Bob grew up with a keen mind and a generous spirit. After graduating from Alamo Heights High School in 1965, he served his country in the Air Force Reserves and was called to active duty during the second Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Bob returned home to earn his Bachelor of Science in Education, beginning a lifelong journey of learning and teaching.
Bob devoted his teaching career to sharing his love of knowledge with students across San Antonio, most memorably at Kirby Middle School in the Judson Independent School District. In his classroom, history came alive, science was an adventure, and every student knew they had a teacher who cared. He was known for his patience, humor, and ability to make even the most reluctant learner curious about the world.
Bob and his beloved wife of over 30 years, Martha “Marty” Mabe, often hit the road, exploring Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. He found joy in discovering the stories of indigenous cultures and the layered history of the American Southwest. Even after retirement, teaching remained part of his nature—he delighted in passing down his curiosity to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will remember him always for his willingness to lead any number of experiments.
Bob is survived by his wife, Marty; his sister, Shelley Hesler-Connolly and her husband, Ward; his stepchildren, Christine Reinhard (Zane) and Kevin Gooden (Heather); his grandchildren, Brittani Chance (Tyler), Hailee Gooden, and Kooper Gooden; his great-grandchildren, Cody and Adaline Chance; and many other extended family members and friends whose lives were brighter for knowing him.
A Memorial service celebrating Bob’s life and legacy will be held on November 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
